We surveyed larger capacity donors and asked them a few key questions.  Did you know that Westfall Gold did a study that showed 89 percent of those within your EXISTING donor base can give more?

Why are they not giving more?  Because of a lack of engagement!

What’s the one thing you wish Christian organizations/non-profits knew about how and why you give?

  • What motivates me to give?  I am rarely asked this question.
  • The geographic regions I want to see impact in.
  • I need to personally understand the need and fully grasp the vision to see the potential for success.
  • I need a strong personal connection to the ask.
  • Credible stories of impact are vital to any decision to give.
  • I want to be inspired to give according to my ability and not their need.
  • To find out if I like to give regular or special gifts and why I prefer that approach.

For non-profits you do support significantly, what are the reasons (both spiritual and practical) behind your giving?

  • The impact the organization has in the local community.
  • I clearly connect with the cause behind the organization.
  • I’m passionate about WHO they are impacting and HOW they are impacted.
  • Ability to prove that they do meaningful work.
  • I trust their stewardship.
  • I give when I’m authentically engaged and truly understood by the organization.
  • Organizations that promote the Gospel and relieve suffering.
  • Good communication and feedback loop from senior leadership of our giving and what has been accomplished.

What are your top red flags when being approached for giving?

  • They ask for too much and too often.
  • Lack of clear oversight of the finances by independent parties.
  • When they are duplicating the service of other locally based organizations.
  • When their goals do not align with the local community.
  • When senior leaders are or become less transparent.
  • They are unable to demonstrate the positive impact of the gift(s).
  • I develop a lack of trust in outcomes and their stewardship.
  • Lack of concrete vision with concrete goals. Too much dreaming w/no proof of ability to execute.
